‘Honesty and selfless commitment’ – how to be an SHP Award winner

Judges of this year’s awards share what they are looking for in a nomination.

The 2022 SHP Awards is still accepting nominations ahead of its closing date on 19 October and Gerry Pearson, Director at Shirley Parsons Project Services – and one of this year’s judges – is looking forward to highlighting the profession as a whole, “The SHP Awards are a brilliant way to recognise and celebrate some amazing initiatives and some super talented people. As a judge, I’m looking forward to broadening my awareness of all the great things going on across the profession. At Shirley Parsons, we have always sought out ways to be different and better from the rest, and that’s exactly what I’ll be looking for from nominees. As we emerge post-pandemic, there’s never been a better time for our industry to innovate, explore and raise the bar. I’m excited to see what this year brings.”

Former IOSH President Jimmy Quinn believes winning an SHP award requires “that person who goes above and beyond”.

Another judge, Jimmy Quinn, Senior Health and Safety Manager at Multiplex and former IOSH president, told SHP that potential winners should note previous recipients. He cited the work of Dr Mavis Nye who won the most influential award last year for raising awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. “As someone who nominated the fantastic Mavis Nye last year, that should indicate what we are looking for as judges – selfless commitment, honesty, work ethic, and the ability to change minds and behaviours,” he said, “this is what I am looking for, that person who goes above and beyond, who leads so that people will follow.”

This year, the 2022 line-up consists of eight awards, including a new category around ESG.

Winners will be announced towards the end of the year and will ultimately culminate with a number of events at Safety and Health Expo 2023.

The deadline for nominations is 19 October and full information about the awards can be found here.
