‘Everyone can have an influence on the environment’ – ESG and the SHP Awards

We profile a new, important category in this year’s SHP Awards – the Trailblazer in ESG.

Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) is key for investors when scrutinising a business plan and the role of the health and safety professional is becoming more prominent in this process.

A report from Intelex, Engaging Workers, Growing Business, Protecting the Planet, published earlier this year, identified the shift of EHS and ESG from compliance to new ways of delivering strategic impact. The report revealed that 74% of those surveyed*, believe that if they don’t improve ESG performance, it will harm their brand and reputation.

Given health and safety’s role in ESG’s integration, we felt this influence should be represented in our 2022 SHP Awards. As such, the Trailblazer in ESG category focuses on those that have made a positive contribution in this area.

Sarah Gould, a judge of this year’s ESG category says it “would be great to hear what you’ve done to make an impact”.

Sarah Gould (pictured) is a Sustainability, ESG & HSEQ Consultant at Shirley Parsons and is part of the judging panel overseeing nominations. She told SHP what she is looking for in a submission.

“The award is a great chance to demonstrate how you have made a positive contribution to ESG. The ideas can be anything, from engaging local communities, putting in recycling initiatives in the workplace, getting people to walk to work rather than drive, having board diversity, improving energy efficiency, encouraging people to use their charity days, running an event to increase the awareness of ESG, it doesn’t matter how big or small they may seem, we want to hear them.

“It would be great to see you talk about how the idea came about, who you had to influence, the challenges you came up against, what the end results were, how this has made a difference, and if it has inspired further ideas or progression.

“Everyone can have an influence on the environment, society and be accountable and transparent, and it would be great to hear what you’ve done to make an impact”
