International Rising Star

Shari Bowen named SHP’s International Rising Star

HSSE Officer at Massy Distribution Ltd., Shari Bowen, has been named SHP’s International Rising Star 2021.

Shari BowenThe SHP Rising Star Awards celebrate young, high-performing health and safety professionals. Some of the brightest, most passionate young stars of the profession.

Shari Bowen, was selected as the winner of SHP’s International Rising Star from a list of three finalists, by the SHP Awards judging panel.

Rising Star International celebrates health & safety professionals under the age of 30, across all sectors, going above and beyond to improve occupational health, safety and/or workplace wellbeing from across the globe. It is brought to you as part of the wider SHP Awards, which, for 2021, is in collaboration with Shirley Parsons, global HSEQ talent experts.

Speaking to SHP after learning of her success, Shari said: “I woke up to the amazing news on LinkedIn. I’m still a little shocked and so grateful to be selected the winner from among two other outstanding nominees.”

Shari began her journey in Occupational Safety and Health as an OSH Intern with the Occupational Safety and Health Section of the Labour Department of Barbados. She graduated from the University of the West Indies with a Master of Science in OESH in 2018.

Shari is currently the HSSE Officer at one of the largest distribution companies in the Caribbean basin and has been instrumental in developing and promoting safety and health. A Graduate Member of IOSH, of which she sits on the Executive Committee of the IOSH Caribbean Branch, Shari is fuelled by a personal drive to raise awareness about OSH.

SHP Awards - Rising Star SquareHer role includes ensuring staff are not only equipped with the information needed to keep them safe at work, but also providing them with opportunities to increase their knowledge of the current COVID environment and how they can better manage their physical and mental health.

Through her social media platform, Women in Safety Caribbean, Shari promotes women who are leading the charge of safety and health nationally and throughout the Caribbean.

The judges commended Shari’s position as a female working in construction in the Caribbean, an already male-dominated sector, in a region known for gender inequality. The fact that Shari also uses social media to engage with other Caribbean women working in the field, proves her dedication to making a change in the industry, encouraging other women to join her in her professional journey, and paving the way for women of the future.
