Themes confirmed for Tall Buildings Fire Safety Conference 2020

The Tall Buildings Fire Safety Conference, co-located with Safety & Health Expo and the Workplace Wellbeing Show in September 2020, is set to focus on three major themes:

  • High Rise Firefighting;
  • Construction Fire Safety;
  • Crisis Management.

tallbuildings-19The three separate one day ‘focus’ conferences will take place at the International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference. Building on delegate feedback from previous events, each theme will feature expert speakers, the latest innovations, and open discussion forums to challenge the status quo.

Early bird discounts are available to ensure attendance is easy and affordable for any who are interested.

Conference Director, Russ Timpson, commented: “We’ve taken onboard the feedback comments from delegates. They wanted focus events where they could discuss current issues with their peers and colleagues from other industries and countries. All the three one day conferences; firefighting, construction and crisis management are relevant and essential. We already have some great speakers lined up, so this should be part of your CPD programme for 2020.”

8 September: High Rise Firefighting

On 19 September, visitors can expect to see the focus on High Rise Firefighting. Speakers from Canada, Australia, Germany and the US will provide valuable insights into current best practice and firefighting innovation. The conference will be chaired by Roy Wilshere of the UK National Fire Chiefs Council. Highlights of the conference will include:

  • Detailed feedback on a major High Rise firefighting exercise undertaken by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service;
  • Firefighting jet nozzle techniques from an expert speaker from Canada;
  • New procedures for ‘ascending exterior facade fires’ from Australia;
  • Fighting fires in electric cars in underground car parks – an emerging hazard.

Russ commented: “This is a very timely meeting of Firefighters from across the UK, Europe and Internationally. The procedures for fighting fires in high rise buildings must be reviewed and improved.”

The conference will be the largest gathering of firefighters working on High Rise Firefighting in recent years. There will be time during the conference for open question and answer sessions.

9 September: Construction Fire Safety

The next day will see the Construction Fire Safety Conference come to London. A recent spate of high-profile construction fires has raised questions about the efficacy of standards, guidance, insurance and risk management. Speakers from the US and UK will explore best practice and challenge current thinking. The conference will be chaired by Martin Wilshire, Safety Director of Multiplex. Highlights of the programme will include:

  • US perspective from Ray O’Brocki of the US Construction Fire Safety Coalition;
  • Industry stalwart Stewart Kidd will delve into ‘Special problems of construction fire safety management in high rise buildings’;
  • Andrew Furness will reflect on CDM and the role or Architects;
  • Prof. Ed Galea of Greenwich University will be reporting back on new research into evacuations from construction sites;
  • HSE Principal Inspector Ray Cook will provide the latest thinking from the HSE on Construction Fire Safety and UK Govt. guidance development.

Russ added: “This is a very timely meeting of Construction Fire Safety Colleagues from across the UK, Europe and Internationally. Modern methods of construction, increased use of timber and new technology such as BIM require us to constantly revaluate our techniques and processes with regard to the risk of fire.”

10 September: Crisis Management in Tall Buildings

The final day will focus on Crisis Management in Tall Buildings. Recent events such as terrorist attacks, cyber hacks, and drone scares have made the discipline more relevant than ever. The conference will be chaired by Andy Baker, a highly experienced corporate security expert and former Commander in the Met Police, Deputy Director National Crime Agency. Highlights include:

  • UK Govt. spokesman on Building resilience;
  • Case studies of crisis management procedures from iconic London tall buildings;
  • A view from the insurance industry;
  • Practical measures to implement crisis management in a tall building.

Conference Chair, Andy Baker, commented: “This is a very timely meeting of Tall Building Security Colleagues from across the UK, Europe and internationally. The increase in the size and complexity of Tall Buildings in city centres means that we must stay ahead of emerging threats such as attacks and workplace violence, drones, and daily challenges that may disrupt businesses.”
