NCRQ LATEST – Phoenix recruit former NCRQ Director of Product Development and NEBOSH publish statement

Appointment suggests plans beginning to form around gap left by training provider as NEBOSH confirms it will map elements of qualification.

Hollie McClean, former Director of Product Development at NCRQ has taken up a role at training provider Phoenix Health and Safety.

In a press release published by Phoenix, McClean said, “My role will focus on the development and improvement of training materials – applying more creative and engaging methods of learning to ensure our courses are memorable and, ultimately, have the desired outcome of raising safety standards.”

She said it “feels like a new era for the health and safety training industry”.

Commeting, Nick Higginson, CEO at Phoenix Health and Safety also revealed he is in talks with NEBOSH regarding a reduction in fees for NCRQ learners who switch to the NEBOSH qualification, and that NEBOSH is “in the process of mapping the NCRQ qualifications against their own”.

SHP approached NEBOSH for comment and was directed to a statement on their site. In it, NEBOSH says: “Inevitably there will be shared learning outcomes between the NEBOSH and NCRQ Diploma syllabuses. We are therefore in the process of mapping the NCRQ qualification against our own to determine these shared learning points and, for people who would like to switch to a NEBOSH Diploma, where we can recognise their prior learning.

“What does this mean? By recognising prior learning, a person may not need to undertake all of a NEBOSH Diploma course. Instead they may be able to complete just some parts of the course, or a bridging course, to prepare them for NEBOSH assessments. We do know that new learners would be required to undertake all NEBOSH National Diploma assessments, which are now one workplace assignment and two scenario-based case studies. We are unable to apply assessment exemptions for anyone who has achieved a unit(s) of any other qualification.

“We are working as quickly as we can to conclude this mapping exercise. As soon as we do we will brief our Learning Partners who are accredited to deliver the NEBOSH National Diploma. We will also publish a statement on our website which confirms these details for interested learners and provide contact details for those NEBOSH-accredited Learning Partners who are able to help.”

The update should provide some solace for those learners unable to complete their NCRQ learning. A previous article published on this site drew a slew of comments from individuals affected by its demise. One post from David Plant shared candidly what the current situation meant to his prospects. “I cannot express how completely distraught I am over this. My continuing job role depends on this qualification, and I am three years into the diploma with only 1.5 modules to complete.”

Sounds like there will be a lot of gaps, and I suppose that will necessitate a fresh fee. Not sure it really is a ‘new era’ for training. It sounds a bit like a patchwork job that stops the training industry losing face to me (too late for that in my humble opinion), moreover, does this now mean that if the mapping equates to very little of the NEBOSH syllabus not being covered, will learners be directly awarded a NEBOSH Diploma despite not studying all of it, or just specific aspects of it? I suspect there is a lot more… Read more »

The longer the vacuum for NCRQ the greater the reputational damage. If not fully resolved within weeks if not days, then the NCRQ brand name is forever tarnished from this omnishambles and no sane learner would risk their hard-earned money again. Any continuity qualification deserves a re-brand and hopefully stay on the right side of IOSH this time, who should hang their head in shame for the impact on prospective members from their litigious behaviors – the only winners here are the legal professionals with their fat fees.

I believe NCRQ is consigned to history now following their legal case loss and therefore there is no organisation to have a reputation to protect.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot behind the scenes that we may never hear about.

Looking back, NCRQ discounted their courses earlier this year and charged re-assessment fees – against their own published guidelines – for simple assignment amendments.

Their fire qualification was launched, despite not being suitable for delivery – again, in what seemed to be a push for short term funds.

With the benefit of hindsight, the writing may have been on the wall for a lot longer than we think…

I had registered with Hatten to transfer my studies, this latest delay is another setback. Is there a way to get a refund of money spent? I had just re registered to complete my Diploma after a period of absence, and tbh Id rather go an do NEBOSH now than hand on waiting.

I had just finished the first module when l had a terrible accident at my place of work and company claimed ignorance over the whole issue and ended up suffering for months on end and could not continue my studies. I have also completed all payments and managed to start again and did not even know the company had gone under. Now l have so much at stake and nobody to assist, help or come to my aid and this is money l took on loan with terrible interest. Can some one please help show me the way forward.
