Tunnel collapse in India traps workers
A tunnel has partially collapsed in Northern India trapping 40 construction workers.
A nearby landslide caused debris to fall on a portion of the Silkyara tunnel trapping workers approximately 200m from its opening.
According to officials, contact has been made with the men who are being provided with water and food as well as oxygen.
Both National and State disaster relief teams are working together to reach the workers, with excavators and JCBs being used to clear mud and stones. However, it is thought the rescue effort could take several hours before contact is made.
The Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district is part of the federal government’s highway project to improve connectivity to famous pilgrimage spots in Uttarakhand. The area is home to some of the holiest sites for Hindus.
