Safety tech at CES 2019
CES 2019: The health and safety gadgets you cannot afford to miss
All eyes will be on the World Trade Centre in Las Vegas this week for the largest and most influential tech event in the world – CES 2019.
More than 4,500 exhibitors will launch new and transformative technology to more than 180,000 attendees, who are expected to attend the event.
Products involving artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, smart cities and robotics will all be unveiled – and many will play a key role in improving safety both at home and in the workplace.
SHP Online has taken a sneak preview at some at products being launched this year and selected some of the highlights:
The Silicon Valley-based technology start-up Digilens has a pair of augmented reality smartglasses.
Current first-generation AR smartglasses are tinted like sunglasses to compensate for the low efficiency and dim displays, which are undesirable to most for social interaction.
But the DigiLens Crystal is transparent and look just like clear glasses from the outside.
“We have set the bar for featherlight indoor/outdoor smartglasses for workers and mobile gamers,” said DigiLens CEO Chris Pickett. “By tethering the smartglasses to powerful mobile devices, we have reduced the barrier to developing compelling AR applications to a simple app.”
Swedish firm Plegium is launching the Smart Pepper Spray at CES 2019, which it claims is the world’s most advanced personal safety product.
It’s a pepper spray that connects to your smartphone and when you fire the pepper spray, your phone immediately and automatically sends a text message with your location to your emergency contacts.
On top of that, your emergency contacts receive an automatic phone call informing them that you are in danger. The location text messages and phone calls are enabled by the FREE Plegium app, available on the App Store and Google Play.
The Smart Pepper Spray is also equipped with a 130 dB siren and strobe LEDs and has a 4-year, no-charging battery life.
AEE has joined forced with ModalAI to incorporate artificial intelligence into its soon-to-be released Mach2 drone, which will allow it navigate environments more safely and efficiently.
The Mach 2 is expected to be equipped with the highly-sophisticated, simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) system, which allows the drone to become aware of its surroundings by creating a virtual map in its brain as it flies.
“The Mach 2 will be a direct result of a partnership between two industry leaders and a talented group of robotics engineers who are dedicated to making drones safer, easier to fly and more inclusive to the consumer,” said Mike Kahn, AEE’s Chief Marketing Officer.
Wearable technology specialists Kopin Corporation announced that 100 organisations have signed up to test its smart glass platform.
Golden-i Infinity is the first voice- and gesture-controlled wearable smart screen device that supports Android and Windows 10-based computers.
It adds a smart head-worn display and hands-free voice control to smartphones and mobile PCs for improved worker productivity and efficiency.
“We understand the complex challenges that today’s IT departments face when equipping workers with new technologies. AR solutions are no different,” said Mike McMahon, VP Business Development and Marketing, Golden-i Infinity.
“While we believe that the feature set, future-proof design and vast compatibility of Infinity makes it an attractive contender, we want our customers to be absolutely sure of their decision to deploy it.
“By creating the Golden-i Infinity pilot program, we’re making it possible for enterprise customers to test drive Infinity and evaluate its capabilities to ensure it’s a proper fit for their organization’s workforce.”
Bosch and Mojio have unveiled a jointly-developed, IoT integrated emergency response solution for any car on the road.
The new integrated emergency response offering combines a crash detection algorithm and eCall emergency services from Bosch with Mojio’s telco-grade cloud platform and white-label mobile apps for connected cars.
The end result is an enhanced safety experience that senses collisions, assesses severity and triggers the appropriate emergency response.
“We’re excited to work side-by-side with Bosch to help save lives by creating a safer and smarter global driving community, enabled by IoT,” said Mojio CEO, Kenny Hawk.
