Passing the baton – Meet the 2024 IOSH President

Mark Glover speaks to incoming IOSH President Stuart Hughes about his plans for the role and asks former President Lawrence Webb what he took from the last 12 months.

Just over a year ago we spoke to outgoing IOSH President Louise Hoskings as she handed over the baton to Lawrence Webb. Now it’s the turn of Lawrence to do the same as Stuart Hughes comes in as the 2024 President.

The pair engage in a candid discussion with SHP Editor Mark Glover, with Lawrence reflecting on the last 12 months of his tenure, and Stuart looking ahead in what is set to be a busy year for the institute.

We discuss mental health, the impending (inevitable?) impact of AI on the sector, but both were also keen to praise each other’s support during the transition. “The fact that we get on so well and see the world in such a similar way is obviously helpful, but it’s it’s Stuart’s time, it’s his opportunity,” Lawrence says in the podcast.

Stuart talks about the wider collaboration opportunity that exists in the membership. “I’ve learned so much already about the endeavors of IOSH as a whole. What the membership is trying to achieve, how they’re making that happen, but I’ve also been astounded by the capability, knowledge and expertise within.”

We also find out about some of IOSH’s initiatives including its Future Leaders mentor programme, how Stuart’s tenure will align with IOSH’s wider strategy, and his passion for collaborative learning, and sharing best practice. “If you’ve learned something, I genuinely believe you’ve got an obligation to share it,” he says.
