Safety & Health Expo 2019

Safety & Health Expo 2019: Plan your day

In advance of this year’s Safety & Health Expo, Karl Simons, Thames Water’s Chief Health, Safety & Security Officer, tells SHP how he and his team plan to approach June’s event.

Why Safety & Health Expo?

Karl SimonsKarl Simons (KS): “For me Safety & Health Expo in London is the go-to annual event that should be in every H&S professionals’ calendar. The sheer volume of organisations showcasing the latest in new and exciting technology, products and services in the market, alongside being able to listen to some of the most influential speakers on the circuit is an extraordinary day out and one not to be missed.”

Who are you taking from Thames Water?

(KS): “We’ve arranged for three key groups to come along this year.

“Firstly, my entire technical team of 85 professionals will accompany me. Given the diversity and complexity of our organisation everyone within my team has different risks and challenges and they are also at different levels in their own personal development journey. So, this event is an excellent way to stimulate the senses and experience the vast array of topical risk solution providers and meet some of their peers in a relaxed and informal setting.

“Next, our Health and Safety Leadership Team will be joining me. This group consists of 20 Operational Directors from our major Tier 1 supply chain partner organisations that meet with me every month giving their time, experience and passion towards setting the right tone and orchestrating the H&S ‘Essential Standards’ that affect all those that work across our vast estate of 7,000 sites.

“Finally, we have our trade union partnership members also coming along. These are the Trade Union Safety Representatives that are influential employees that have a keen interest in the Safety and Health of their members and a group I rely on to keep the two-way Information and advice flowing across all parts of the business.”

What do you have planned on the day?

(KS): “We will start the day with a coffee in one of the rooms inside the venue, where I will present to everyone an update on the present business performance and challenges that we face in the coming year, this sets the right mindset before I explain the day’s activities and expectations. Then we will split the group into small teams and send them out into the arena with one specific goal – source innovative solutions, products and services that will add value to our business and support us in sustaining our vision of continuing to send everyone home safe and well every day!

“After a few hours and lots of steps undertaken, everyone will return to the meeting room at lunch time for a bite to eat following which each group will discuss and identify and present back to all their top solutions they’d like to put forward to be invited to come and meet with our leadership team here at Thames.

“It’s a great way to have a very powerful and thought provoking engagement event. It stops people from wandering around aimlessly inside the arena, instead we have a purpose which keeps us all focussed and engaged – it’s also an immensely fun day out for my team free of charge!”
