NEBOSH unveils new-look General Certificate

The NEBOSH General Certificate – held by 300,000 people around the world – has a new look.

Unveiled in September, the certificate now even better represents the role of a real-life health and safety professional. It will equip successful learners with the skills they need to protect their people and embark on a successful health and safety career.

Ian Taylor - NEBOSH CEONEBOSH Chief Executive, Ian Taylor, said: “Without doubt, the best just got even better. To go home safely at the end of the working day is a right, not a privilege; our General Certificates help secure that right for people all over the world. Through an extensive consultation process we captured not just what companies want their people to know – but what they need to be able to do. We’ve made sure the refreshed qualification truly meets the needs of the hundreds of thousands of organisations and learners it’s designed to serve.”

Greater focus on risk
Having consulted over 3,000 people in the redevelopment, NEBOSH says that risk assessment was a key focus for health and safety professionals.

Ian added: Risk management is a key part of the role for anyone with health and safety responsibilities so we’ve made it central to the new-look certificate. Thanks to our practical focus on the real, everyday risks that people encounter, our learners will learn how to identify and manage these risks so they provide real value to their employers – protecting people and protecting profits.

Updated assessment

The syllabus has been streamlined so learners can focus on the most important topics in greater depth. NEBOSH says the emphasis is very much on practical application which has been reflected in an updated assessment; not only will learners gain new skills but they can put them into practice too:

  • One exam to assess what they know;
  • One extended, practical assignment to assess what they can do back in the workplace.

It’s envisaged that this approach will not only provide a valuable learning experience but also provide employers with an instant impact when learners return to the workplace

Recognised and respected by industry

The NEBOSH General Certificate is recognised by many high profile organisations. One of these is Thames Water where Health, Safety, Security and Wellbeing Director, Karl Simons, has spearheaded its use for all managers within the business. The impact? A 75% reduction in workplace injuries and illness.

This video with Karl explains more:

NEBOSH has hundreds of accredited Learning Partners around the world, offering people the flexibility to choose learning that suits them – online, face-to-face, blended or block release.
