Inclusivity initiative launched by L’Oréal OSH chief and IIRSM

L’Oréal and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) have joined forces for a brand new scheme to encourage greater representation among those responsible for protecting the safety and health of people at work.

Successful applicants to The Hummingbird Bursary will be rewarded with places, funded by L’Oréal, on the IIRSM Managing Health & Safety Risks – The Essentials training course.

Bursary recipients will be carefully selected by a judging panel with representatives from leading organisations in occupational safety and health and risk management. These include:

  • Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
  • OneWISH, a global coalition for women and inclusion in safety and health
  • NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health)
  • L’Oréal itself and,
  • IIRSM

Malcolm Staves, L’Oréal Global VP Health and Safety

L’Oréal Global Vice-President Health and Safety Malcolm Staves said: “I coined the phrase ‘be the hummingbird’ inspired by a fable about how we can all make our own important contribution in life.

“The Hummingbird Bursary promotes the idea that every one of us has a part to play in creating safer, healthier places of work. I’m delighted to be teaming up with IIRSM to offer their excellent training as part of the scheme, and thanks to our partners on the judging panel, RoSPA, NEBOSH and OneWish.”

L’Oréal, IIRSM and judging panel partners together support greater inclusivity in occupational safety and health.

IIRSM Chief Executive Phillip Pearson said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with L’Oréal to support under-represented groups with our Managing Health and Safety Risks course, with bursary places this coming spring 2023.

“The Hummingbird Bursary is a great initiative to help drive a safer and more sustainable world, and we’re very grateful for L’Oréal’s support but equally the time and expertise of the judging panel. We’re very excited to start reviewing applications in 2023!”

IIRSM Managing Health & Safety Risks – The Essentials is delivered in a live and online training environment, and provides an understanding of how you can proactively play your role in managing health and safety within your area of work.

It’s a course for both people managers and those moving into roles with organisational safety and health responsibilities, such as business owners, HR, facilities and compliance.

Places on The Hummingbird Bursary scheme are limited, and the first Managing Health & Safety Risks – The Essentials sessions begin on 28 February 2023.

To apply for the bursary, email the following to [email protected]

  • your up-to-date Curriculum Vitae
  • an explanation of no more than 500 words of how the bursary will both support your development in occupational safety and health, and promote inclusivity in occupational safety and health
  • one reference from a manager or senior occupational safety and health co-worker

The deadline for this round of applications for The Hummingbird Bursary is Friday, 10 February 2023.
