Competition for an occupational hygienist to win internship at Shell

The British Occupational Hygiene Society announced the details of a competition for a recently qualified occupational hygienist to win an internship at Shell, the leading sponsor of the forthcoming 10th International Scientific Conference of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA).

Shell has launched the competition as part of its commitment of developing the science and practice of occupational hygiene, in recognition of the important contribution the occupational hygiene profession makes to Shell’s business.

The successful applicant will win an internship of up to six months in duration with Shell’s Health Function. The competition is open to suitably qualified candidates with less than five years’ experience in the field of occupational hygiene, in any part of the world where the IOHA has an affiliated association.

The submission to enter the competition should be in the form of a clearly written business case, which showcases an innovative application of occupational hygiene and exposure science. This business case should clearly capture the commercial value of the idea and also demonstrate the contribution that occupational hygiene made to the outcome.

The submission may be based on a hypothetical scenario, or alternatively, drawn from the applicant’s own work experience.

Applicants should also include a short personal statement, detailing their motivation for applying for the internship.

The competition will be judged by a panel of occupational hygiene experts, including an in-house team from Shell’s Health Function.

Announcing the competition, Dr Karen Niven, global health risk and governance manager at Shell International, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a young or recently qualified occupational hygienist to see how a major multinational company effectively manages its health risks.

“However, the benefits of the internship go much further than this: Shell’s Health Function is based around a style of multidisciplinary partnership working, which is a aimed at creating business value through a powerful culture of health for people, workplaces and the environment. The successful applicant will therefore experience a corporate mindset which is at the cutting edge of worker health protection.

“As the headline sponsors of IOHA 2015, we look forward to receiving submissions which really highlight the value of the discipline of occupational hygiene. We know from our own experience at Shell that, with the right conditions, worker health becomes a business value-add – not a cost – in support of the goal of a healthy, high performing workforce. If you are starting out in your occupational hygiene career and want to make a real difference in the field of worker health protection, we’d like to hear from you.”

The closing date for applications is 10 April 2015. The winner will be announced at IOHA 2015, taking place in London from 25 to 30 April 2015.

Submissions for the competition should be sent to [email protected]

The actual internship will be contingent upon the conclusion of an internship agreement and the precise location, dates and duration of the internship will be determined in discussion between the winner and Shell.

The internship will cover travel, on one occasion, from the winner’s place of residence to the internship location and back, and a fixed gross housing allowance. No other remuneration will be paid in connection with the internship.

The competition is open to all applicants working in all types of industries, including the public, private and educational sectors. It is recommended that applicants seek the support of their employers for their submission, where necessary.
