28 April: International Workers’ Memorial Day

As well as being World day for Safety and Health at Work, today also marks International Workers’ Memorial Day. It is a day to remember those that have been killed, maimed, injured and made ill by work and a chance to renew the pledge to fight for the living, by raising safety concerns in the workplace and raising public awareness of the importance of health and safety.

This year’s theme is: Strong laws. Strong enforcement. Strong unions.

According to the HSE in 2014/2015 142 workers in Great Britain were killed at work. The statistics show 1.2million people suffering from a work-related illness and 611,000 injuries occurring at work. Injuries and ill health from current working conditions is estimated to cost £14.3 billion (2013/14).

Today is a day to remember all of those people killed and injured in their workplace.
