Free information – Guidance for safe loading bays

With the Christmas rush approaching, Mentor Training is offering free advice to help companies improve the safety of loading bays.

The training provider is warning businesses that Autumn is recognised as the most dangerous time of year for employees who load and unload goods. This is because of the pre-Christmas surge in deliveries and the combination of an increase in seasonal staff and changes to working patterns.

Mentor Training advises customers to review their loading-bay safety procedures. This should include carrying out additional risk assessments, providing delivery drivers with a printed copy of safe unloading and loading procedures, and ensuring that all visiting staff are adequately trained in recognising the risks involved.

Mentor Training technical manager Steve Baldwin said: “With each delivery bringing so many potential issues, loading-bay safety really does come down to human skills – giving everyone the knowledge to spot a problem, and the confidence and authority to do something about it, before an accident happens. That applies to temporary staff and pedestrians, as much as it does to full-time loading staff, drivers, or forklift-truck operators.”
