Fans injured in storm at Backstreet Boys concert
14 people were taken to hospital after a metal structure collapsed in Oklahoma.
At least 14 people have been injured at a Backstreet Boys concert after a metal structure collapsed during high winds in the US state of Oklahoma.
According to a statement from organisers, Winstar World Casino and Resort, a threat of lightening had prompted an evacuation of the outdoor venue. Fans had started to be moved to shelter 30 minutes before the incident happened.
“However, about 150 patrons who were standing in line for the Backstreet Boys concert did not heed staff’s warnings.”, it said.
Wind speeds of around 70-80mph caused the metal entrance structure to collapse on top of them. The casualties were treated at the scene and 14 people were transported to a nearby hospital. Two have since been released.
“We know that fans often suffer through inclement weather for their favourite acts, but this was an unusual event and our thoughts are with those who were injured during this storm,”The statement concluded.
The show was cancelled as a result of the inclement weather.
