University wins gold medal for sixth year in a row

Leeds Beckett University has been awarded a gold medal in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards for the sixth consecutive year.

The RoSPA Awards, first launched in 1956, recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work. Through the scheme, which is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Speaking after the announcement, Professor Susan Price, Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, said: “I am delighted that we have achieved the gold medal for occupational health and safety for our sixth consecutive year. One of the areas that we have been most proud of this year is our fire safety work activity across a large diverse estate. Colleagues across our University work hard to ensure that we have a safe and healthy environment in which to work and study and this is reflected in our consistent success in the RoSPA Awards.”

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s Awards Manager, added: “The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Leeds Beckett University, contribute to raising standards overall and we congratulate them.”

The Gold medal will be presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre, on Wednesday 15 July. The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive, grading achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels.

Organisations that maintain high standards in consecutive years can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction. Competitive awards are presented in more than 20 industry sectors, and they also recognise excellence in specialist areas, such as the management of occupational road risk (MORR).

This achievement builds on Leeds Beckett’s University’s successful start to 2015, as earlier this year it was recognised for its commitment to promoting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans staff and students in the latest Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. Leeds Beckett entered the top 100 British employers for the first time this January at number 51; a rise in 117 places from last year’s ranking of 168 in Stonewall’s nationally-recognised league table of gay-friendly employers.
