A glimpse into the past: The Great Room’s rich history and RoSPA’s inspiring journey
The Great Room at the hotel, where the RoSPA Awards took place, holds a fascinating history. In the past, it was home to a vast ice rink where RoSPA’s former patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, learned to skate back in 1933.
Around the same time, a charity in its infancy was urging the government to investigate the causes of road accidents. The government responded, incorporating road commissioner reporting into official policy. This early success propelled the charity to become the UK’s leading accident prevention organisation, eventually evolving into RoSPA. Over the years, RoSPA has united like-minded individuals and organisations to prevent fatal and life-changing accidents.
Kicking off the event, RoSPA Life President Lord Jordan of Bournville CBE shared a video message for the leaders in attendance. He acknowledged the unfortunate reality that most people know someone who has experienced a fall. In England alone, falls on stairs claim 700 lives each year – most of which are preventable. Lord Jordan encouraged the audience of ‘safety exemplars’ to pave the way in accident prevention, showcasing a brief video to demonstrate how it can be done, making us of RoSPA’s free fall-fighter scheme.
