Safety week to test fork-lift knowledge

The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) is challenging workers and managers to test their knowledge on fork-lift truck risks.

The organisation has teamed up with training provider Mentor to launch two quiz modules to coincide with National Fork-Truck Safety Week next month (23-27 September).

According to the FLTA, every day at least one worker in the UK suffers serious injuries as a result of an incident involving a fork lift truck.

While there have been fewer incidents in recent years, the latest HSE figures suggest that the numbers have reached a plateau.

Peter Harvey, chief executive of the FLTA, highlighted the need for clearer communication of the dangers: “Sadly, nearly all of these tragedies could have been avoided with a basic understanding of key safety principles.”

In a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of workplace transport, the free online modules have been created to test knowledge at all levels.

One module is aimed at those who work directly or alongside fork-lift trucks, while the other is targeted at managers, supervisors and key decision-makers.

The FLTA hopes that one million participants will take-up the challenge this September and help break the current plateau in incidents.
