The Olympic Village worker found dead in the stairwell of his crane at the site yesterday (28 June) was not involved in a work-related accident.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a post-mortem has revealed that the man, thought to be in his 60s, died of “natural causes”.

The death was initially reported as the Olympic construction project’s first work-related fatality, and the HSE was called in to investigate. It had been suggested that the crane driver may have slipped when climbing down the ladder of the structure in yesterday’s torrential rain.

The Olympic Delivery Authority, which regularly emphasises the project’s exemplary safety record and its fatality-free status, said it was unable to comment on the ongoing investigation, but extended its sympathies to the worker’s family and friends.
