Where is the mental health agenda headed and who is the wellbeing professional of the future?

Some significant changes have happened over the past 18 months regarding how businesses are approaching mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. So, what is next for solution focused best practice? SHP speaks to Kendelle Tekstar, Senior Product Manager at Acre Frameworks, to find out…

Health & wellbeing zoneThere is a growing call to action for businesses to focus more on prevention of mental ill health and the application of a holistic approach to workplace wellbeing, rather than delivering on reactive objectives.

The role of leadership has been noted as a significant influence on the effectiveness of the development and implementation of a health and wellbeing strategy. Whether awareness oriented or solution focused, what are senior leaders taking ownership for in businesses that are effectively addressing mental health and how are they delivering on it? What will they need to invest their time and money in next?

Kendelle will be addressing these questions, and more, in an SHP webinar on Monday 29 July.

The agenda is very much in its infancy and certain aspects of workplace mental health have proven more difficult for businesses to tackle and some simply get far less airtime. Kendelle and the panel will be debating what business are struggling with most, where employees are expecting/needing to see greater change, and what topics and challenges related to mental health the business world is not considering enough. Lastly, and very importantly, the panel will discuss what holistic good practice looks like to strategically prevent mental ill health.

The wellbeing professional of the future

In a separate debate, a panel will explore the landscape and projected direction of the burgeoning wellbeing industry, and where it intersects health and safety in different organisations through the eyes of three senior leaders with long-standing track records in the health & safety industry. It will also examine what type of talent businesses are recruiting to effectively deliver on wellbeing in the workplace.

  • How would you summarise your business’ wellbeing strategy and what influenced how it has been developed?
  • What does high potential wellbeing talent look like? How do you envision requirements for this type of role evolving?
  • What are the three things you believe a business should consider to successfully deliver a wellbeing strategy?

Panellist Steve Howells, Group HSSE Director at Ladbrokes Coral Group, says: “Businesses need to clarify the desired outcomes, ask the right questions, and tailor solutions to the specific business needs. They must know why they want to address wellbeing and then give the people a call to action to establish the how.”

Perhaps looking beyond the conventions shackled by mindset, could maybe, just put the horse back in front of the cart and return to the long-gone days in the early 70’s when addressing the “reasonably foreseeable” was normal whereas today the very predictable as, since well before the HSE Better Display Screen RR 561 2007, everyone knew that DSE operators would “carry-on regardless” knowing they are being debilitated by eye-strain, CVS or Screen Fatigue and two thirds of them would end-up with other repetitive stress injuries.
“Presenteeism” as a handy euphemism for carrying-on regardless self-harming for fear of putting your head above the trench line doesn’t mean the repetitive stress injuries / adaptations are going to be only temporary just that you can carry-on working to live a bit longer before the bodies self-preservation system kicks-in to enforce an escape from the workplace stress or stressors by making you sufficient ill so you cannot continue persevering any longer.
