PROTECTION FOR EVERYONE
SHP is running a campaign to bring awareness around the issues of ill-fitting PPE.
“It amazes me that we expect anyone to want to work in our industry when we can’t give them the basic kit to keep them safe,” wrote Sandi Rhys Jones OBE, current President of the CIOB, and a passionate advocate for inclusive PPE. Her article was one of the catalysts for the campaign.
As was a powerful piece by geologist Katherine Evans. “Manual handling was a massive challenge,” she said. “Walking was painful and core logging on the floor was almost impossible, making me look disengaged, lazy and uncomfortable on-site, as if I didn’t want to be there, all of which couldn’t have been further from the truth.” She goes on to say how the issue ultimately erodes enthusiasm, confidence, and even career potential. “Eventually, after a while you stop being asked, stop being involved, stop learning, stop progressing.”
And everyone is key here, as Sandi Rhys-Jones identifies: “This isn’t just an issue faced by women, but also some men, where PPE isn’t compatible with body shape and size.” Furthermore, many workers also wear other clothing including religious headwear, for example, where protective equipment is not conducive.
Throughout this year, SHP will be producing a suite of content: from personal stories of workers, but also positive articles from companies and manufacturers who are making PPE inclusive. We will also be commissioning a PPE report on the topic, as well as producing webinars and podcasts on the topic – there is much to discuss!
Please get involved, share your stories and support a campaign that affects everyone!

“As a woman in safety, I’ve faced challenges with ill-fitting PPE. Often the sizing and fit are tailored to men and result in uncomfortable and baggy PPE. I’ve also struggled when wearing protective hairstyles such as braids or my natural hair and getting bump caps or hard hats that fit. I would like more acknowledgement that not one size fits all and more inclusive PPE that is affordable and accessible.”
