Health and Safety Career Development – CPD Quiz Continuing professional development is really important in any line of work but it's not all about 'doing a course'. I only entered ab&d for No 6, but now I read the answers, I saw that c was relevant after all!
I was a little surprised I scored as much as I did (14/15). Maybe I’m my own worst critic eh?
As forNo10, I sussed this out but I feel that it was still a bit of a mean trick because we are conditioned to answer all questions, it was agony to not answer at all. I was so tempted to pick one aargh!!
Overall, this did for me what it set out to do – make me think and more than that, i enjoyed doing it.

While sitting in the office in Rotterdam awaiting a weather window, I thought I should have a go at this as I am one of the many guys at Tech IOSH level(and doing quite well with it).
To my surprise I achieved 8/10.
Looks like I should be setting my sights just that bit higher, good quiz SHP.

A god overview, and it should help with new entrants into safety. I liked the statements covering practical experience vs course, how true so long it is effectively covered in the CV

  • Colinrobilliard

I got 9 out of the ten questions right question 10 confussed me a little so i didnt provide an answer. I was interested in the correct answer as in todays world many employers are only interested in how many qualifications a person holds relevent or not, they some belive that they are a bench mark for intelligence.Which may not be the case it may just mean the person is good at taking exams.

  • Damelcfc

    Ok – 6.5/10

I have 10 totally wrong! – I actually circled all of them (being brutally honest) with the answer being none-of-them! :-/ Ouch!

  • David_Dobell

Interesting but I did think 2d could also apply. Otherwise 10 of 10 glad I didnt answer Q10!

  • Druidware

Although I agree that the statement regarding question 10 is correct, generic training and qualifications i.e. Management, leadership, coaching and mentoring (especially vocationally based) will enhance the knowledge, skills and experience as mentioned in the stated answer.

  • Esq247

    Ok, I scored 8.5/10.
Very intersting article, has shed some light into an area where many practitioners honestly needed guidance.

  • Gpc1164

I must be doing something right!!!!! All correct. CPD very worthwhile for personal and career objectives.

  • Jim

I got 6 right and was surprised at some of the answers and got No 10 totally wrong

  • John

Strangely enough I completed a CMI Management Diploma last year however there were some in our organisation who could not see the connection with the course and my role as a Safety Manager and so it is good to see it in here as a recommendation.

In question 10 I didn’t think that there was a correct answer. The CPD Spotlight however says “by answering the questions below”. The correct answer from CPD Spotlight was “None of them” This style of questioning I feel is a bit sly

  • Johng

I got 9 correct and got number 10 completely wrong.Although semi-retired I’m still interested in the dynamics of workplace management. This was in my view a very interesting article

  • Johnha_Uk

A bit annoyed at Q10. At least some indication that it was a trick question would have been fair!
Seriously, unless you are a philanthropic millionaire, all of us work for money. There is mortgage to pay and food to be put on the table. Improving your CV, so that you can get the next job, whether it’s a voluntary or involuntary move, has to be important. a and d are therefore the correct (non-trick) answers to this question.

  • Krisandbronwyn

As a new player in the safety profession I found this an interesting read – prior to reading this article I was one of those new professionals that when preparing my PDP came up with a list of “technical” areas and focused on twhat courses were available (because let’s be honest, in the real world a list of courses on your CV does matter to employers)…but atleast now I have a more broader view of CPD and will be a little more creative – after all it’s what you know, not what course you went on

  • Marcus

    Also got Q10 totally wrong!
Also got Q1 wrong, but feel that one is questionable. Put ‘b’ first then changed it to ‘d’. Surely a PDP is ‘An identification of long-term goals and potential ways of getting there’?

  • Robert

Interesting article was able to relate to the points , I have always been worried about other who have the time to go on courses, yet I have been busy sorting the issues at the coalface with effect or even spending time with the engineers to learn and understanding their issue and hazards. And hence the article was good to me

  • Sheila

did okay, got 8 right but I knew that number 10 didn’t offer a correct answer, but had to choose one of them. For number 1 I chose d – which I still believe is closely linked to the ‘right’ answer that was b…

  • Will

Good article, shame about Question 10 on the quiz. There should have been an option for e) none of the above…

When job adverts accept experience in lieu of qualifications then I’ll stop chasing those paper certificates!

  • John Shadlock

    Experience, experience. Qualifications. Competency!!!

  • Lynnette Tucker

Though provoking which is always good. Answered all but no 10 correctly, albeit none of the answers seemed terribly appropriate so picked the one I thought most likely to be correct, but just goes to show all is not always as it seems! Enjoyable thank you.

  • Mal Greenleaf

    Hi All,

I have completed the quiz but you all seem to be commenting on the correct answers, i cannot see them, they are not on the email i received….

    • Roz Sanderson

Hi Mal – that’s been updated now. If you try again you should receive an email with the correct answers.

      Roz

  • Jake

Interesting quiz, out of curiosity I didn’t go with what I thought the correct answer would be, but what I believed to be true – I got 6/10!!

Should a PDP only be about current gaps? Volunteering work certainly can build people management capability. Does a Safety Manager have to a technical expert? (not so in the company I work.. there are teams for that..).

My takeway, is that as a broad professional ‘what makes a H&S professional / Manager’ can mean very different things to different people 🙂
