So you know the theory behind Safety Differently, but how does it work in reality? There are countless ways to make its core principles suit your team, and on Monday 19th March we are asking four health and safety leaders to share how they’re experimenting with it in their organisations.
From seeing people as solutions rather than problems to focusing on safety as an ethical responsibility and harnessing its positive attributes, these managers and directors have unique approaches to Safety Differently that might just inspire you.
Chris Lea – Director of Wellbeing, HS&E and Responsibility, UCB (UK and Ireland)
With more than 20 years of experience as a health, safety and environment practitioner within pharmaceuticals, construction and the NHS, Chris hopes to further contribute to UCB’s patient-centric mission by helping employees have great (and safe!) days at work. He’s also currently studying for a M.Sc. in Psychology.
Lorene Carter – Lead HSSE Manager, London to Corby railway electrification project
From high-risk rail operational projects in the UK to fly-in fly-out mine and road construction in Australia, Lorene has 18 years of experience in challenging safety and rail operational leadership roles. She’s adopted Safety Differently principles along the way, which have helped transform her projects and foster more resilient teams.
Simon Bown – Head of Health, Safety and Environment at Luton Airport
Since starting his health and safety career at Stansted Airport 12 years ago, Simon has spent the last six years heading up health, safety and environment at Luton Airport. He believes Safety Differently empowers his team by encouraging autonomy and trust, and allowing people to deliver the business objective more effectively. Simon also speaks nationally and internationally about moving away from tradition and trying something ‘a little bit different’.
Helen Rawlinson – Managing Director, Art of Work Ltd
Before joining Art of Work, a consultancy that helps organisations transition between traditional safety and Safety Differently, Helen garnered more than 10 years of experience in across construction, manufacturing, recycling and government.
