Thank you for registering: ‘TARGET ZERO’ – Minimising Accident and Injury in the Workplace

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Summary

Available on demand.
Duration: 1 hour

Nobody goes to work to get injured. However, figures show that 581,000 workers sustained injuries in 2018/2019, 147 fatally. For most businesses, zero accidents and lost working days is the ultimate goal. While this may seem like an impossible objective for most organisations, it still remains the goal to aspire to. With 70% of accidents related to temporary works, better contractor management may have the biggest impact on achieving ‘target zero’.

In March-May 2020 Alcumus SafeContractors conducted a survey with SHP to understand the specific challenges and risks around contractor management, as well as exploring the tools and techniques which firms are using to address these challenges.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • The impact on COVID-19 on attitude towards vetting contractors for Health, Safety, Ethical and Sustainable factors
  • The top challenges EHS managers face when managing contractors
  • Tools and techniques EHS managers use to source and manage contractors, and how this may change in a post-COVID-19 environment

My experience is that managers do not believe that Zero is achievable. It must be better to set Zero as a target anyway and to plan to achieve it, even if you may not get there!

Define what is being measured. It depends on the what is accepted as a accident or incident. Is a papercut? Most say not. Some state that an accident has to have lost time and that lost time is a full working day not at work. A lot of workers would rather take these days as holiday, because a sick day is only paid SSP and a holiday is at least a full shift at basic wage. So it is possible to have zero days LTA, but that covers a lot of hidden issues and repetitive minor injuries which could be the precursor to a more significant incident. You could have 40 first aid interventions, but zero LTA’s. Therefore I see systems that ‘target zero’ as not being reliable at measuring H&S performance. You have to define what you are measuring first. Is it still a LTA even if they IP take a days holiday? Plus with very low numbers of incidents you are playing the probability game. There will always be a probability of an incident if you have any risk, no matter how well controlled.

Which date? August the 19th or August the 12th

    • Ian Hart

Hi Trevor, it’s on the 19th.

Objective (target) should be SMART – achievable, realistic, measured with objective to improve trend towards a reduction target toward an ideal target zero.
