Basildon firm avoids HSE action over asthma risk

A company which had been served with three improvement notices relating to occupational asthma by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has avoided further action.

The Basildon-based firm, which does design and fit-out work for buildings, complied with the improvement notices that the HSE had issued earlier in 2017.

The HSE had stated that the company, Concept Interior Management, had put staff at ‘significant risk’ of occupational asthma due to potential exposure to isocynates in a spraying booth.

The firm uses the booth in order to minimise exposure to the materials which contain isocynates, but it had not been tested or undergone a safety examination for more than a year. It was also found that a ventilation system for woodworking machinery had also not been tested.

Inspectors had said that there was a failure to ensure employees were under suitable health surveillance.

Notices

As a result, the HSE had served notices on the firm in June 2017.

But it has now confirmed that the company, which has a client list including Boeing and the Royal Mail, is compliant with all of the improvement notices.

Company director Tony Bedding told a local paper: “The health and safety of all our employees is always at the forefront and as soon as we were made aware of the problems, we dealt with them with immediate effect.”
