Rising Stars is brought to you as part of the wider SHP Awards, which, for 2022, is in collaboration with Shirley Parsons, global HSEQ talent experts.
Rising Star in Manufacturing recognises individuals in the UK manufacturing sector, aged 30 and under, going above and beyond to improve occupational health, safety and/or workplace wellbeing.
The winner is…
Courtney Beecham, Lumentum
Courtney started employment as an EHS Assistant in 2020 at Lumentum. She has an Environmental Health Degree, however has no formal H&S qualifications. However, she immediately demonstrated a commitment to gaining H&S knowledge, widening her experiences by working with all stakeholders, learning the business, and demonstrating a passion for interaction and engagement with the workforce through the following initiatives:
- Facilitated and Chairs a bi-monthly health and safety forum involving health and safety walkthroughs, garnering innovation and improvements that are then communicated to the site’s leadership team.
- Improved contractor and visitor control by creating an interactive video contractor induction, improving safety awareness and behaviour. The induction process was previously a paper exercise undertaken once the contractors were on site. Courtney developed the content and script, hired a professional audio-visual company to come and film the content which Courtney directed.
- Has presented several best practice innovations to the global Lumentum team in the USA, EMEA and Asia.
Her nominator for this awards explained that Courtney is becoming recognized globally as a developing H&S innovator. “Courtney’s drive, passion and innovations will be further enhanced once she begins to share her best practice on a wider scale,” the nomination read.
Finalists
Callum started at Tata Steel – Port Talbot at the age of 18 as an occcupational safety apprentice and, two years on has now pivoted into the heavy manufacturing environment where he is the health and safety officer within the ironmaking and burdening area. It’s a challenging position, usually filled by an experienced safety officer, however Callum proved he was the right person for the job while acting as the interim safety officer during a period of organisational change. At just 20 years old he has developed a good working relationship with employees at all levels.
While in the role, he has been heavily involved in the review of the area’s compliance arrangements cross-referencing the organisation’s Health and Safety Management System. Callum now leads these reviews and assesses the area reporting to senior management teams to provide recommendations for improvement.
The nomination we received on Callum’s behalf references his maturity in glowing terms, “Callum is extremely mature for his age, especially for the profession, that he has chosen and it’s extremely refreshing to see someone so young fly the safety flag.”

Throughout the last two years, Peter has undertaken a significant amount of volunteering, in his own time, to enhance the profession through engaging with a huge cross-section of stakeholders in IOSH’s volunteering team. Through engaging with Health and Safety communities, industry groups, and regional branches, he has gone above and beyond to further his profession at a critical time, post-COVID.
Through his position and volunteering, Peter has strived to deliver a simple mission – “inspire people to ask good questions, empower them to make good decisions”. To this end Peter has been able to influence thousands of professionals inside and outside of health and safety, he has set the foundations for standardised health and safety within his business, and helped shape the future of the profession for years to come through his volunteering.
