Winners revealed for SHP Rising Star Awards 2017

The winners of SHP Rising Star in Health and Safety 2017 were announced this afternoon in the Safety & Health Expo keynote arena.

The awards celebrate the future leaders of  the profession, recognising the achievements of those individuals who are new to the profession and making a difference in their organisation. The awards are supported by the Association of Project Safety, BOHS, IIRSM, NEBOSH, RoSPA and Thames Water.

The Rising Star Award 2017 winners

Following an overwhelming response to the launch last year, the awards have been extended and arranged into three categories; Biggest Impact, Rising Star UK and Rising Star International.

Rising Star winner:

Jamie Sutherland-Pownall, Senior Safety Specialist, Sellafield Ltd.

The Rising Star award for 2017 has been awarded to Jamie Sutherland-Pownall. Jamie is “leading the charge” on positive culture change and attitudes towards a career in Health and Safety and is highlighting the exciting opportunities and challenges the future generation can get involved in.

At 26 Jamie is a driven, determined and definitive rising star in health and safety. His commitment to the health and safety profession spans both his professional work  at Sellafield, but also outside of work promoting and progressing the health and safety profession through his work with IOSH, IOSH Council and promoting careers to the younger generation in health and safety.

He actively promotes the OSH profession through visiting schools and colleges and delivering talks and sessions to students preparing for future study, bringing an energy and vitality to revive peoples interest in the profession.

Biggest Impact:

Matthew Hazleton, Motivational Speaker, on behalf of Proud2bSafe

New award, the Biggest Impact award is open to anyone who joined the profession in the last 18 months and justifiably awarded to Matthew Hazleton.

Due to traumatic events in his personal and business life, Matthew found myself wondering how he could make a difference to others.

“Proud2bSafe encouraged and motivated me to share me and my family’s experiences in order to encourage directors and senior managers to be more responsible for their actions, the people they employ, and also show the effect of how things can quickly escalate and affect not only their lives, families, friends and work colleagues but the same of the employee too.”

Matthew has spoken about his experiences at Safety & Health Expo 2017. Read about his story here.

International award winner:

Emmanuel Uwalaka

Emmanuel Uwalaka is a highly passionate health and safety person who “loves everything about safety”, nominated for his rich and varied work in Nigeria and other west African countries and praised for “creating massive awareness of the dangers of non-compliance of safety”.

He has consulted successfully for major companies and industries such as Nigerian Maritime and Administrative Safety Agency, Dangote, Nigerian Ports Authority, he has helped in setting up safety departments in major companies, and organised annual conferences for the company he works with in Nigeria, Benin Republic and Ghana.

Highly Commended:

Dionne Crouch, Health & Safety advisory, London City Airport

Dionne is “an inspiration” to everyone she meets and works with. Dionne encourages staff to get involved with London City Airport’s ‘Cake & Safety’ initiative where all departments get involved, and “rolls her sleeves up” to help with traffic management around the ExCeL. where she “helped the traffic move until the police arrived to take over an hour after she had been there and it was past clocking off time she stayed to help out”.

In addition Dionne always helps out at the local church with events such as helping to feed and shelter the homeless. “She a great listener staff absolutely love her”
