Work-related road accidents are the biggest cause of work-related accidental death. Back in May 2002, Andy Deacon wrote the article ‘The Killing Roads’ for SHP magazine and highlighted the dangers that can occur with workplace transport.
Back then, around 70 fatalities and 1000 major injuries each year involved vehicles in the workplace, accounting for nearly a quarter of the recorded total for deaths at work, according to HSE. The Work-related Road Safety Task Group’s report at the time recommended that the government do more to reduce at-work road traffic incidents. Traffic law took precedence over health and safety at work, meaning there was little motivation for employers to examine whether failures in their health and safety management systems had contributed to any at-work driving incidents.
The article goes on to discuss risk assessment and the role of the safety practitioner. Managing driver fatigue and making sure vehicles are carefully maintained are some ways in which drivers, and the public, can be kept safe.
