Knowledge is key in these circumstances; be aware of your environment, have experts on hand to help if a situation arises where you’re out of your depth, and research an area before you go.
Edwards uses examples of BBC journalists in war zones and a course to provide safety training for employees travelling to potentially dangerous areas. The practical course has the team react to conflict and recognise dangers, the aim being to prepare them should a threatening situation arise.
