Throwback Thursday: safety leadership

Leadership and innovation is always a hot topic, in this Throwback Thursday from May 2007 Neil Molyneux’s article looks at whether senior management knows what good health and safety leadership is in practice, rather than just in relation to their legal responsibilities. One of the definitions of leadership Molyneux uses is: “It is a about making things happen that wouldn’t happen otherwise – it’s about getting significant new things done, and continuous improvement.”

A HSE Research Report at the time noted: “The available literature suggests that directors may lack the specific competence (knowledge and skills) required to lead effectively on health and safety, and that rectifying this may improve organisations’ health and safety performance.”

The article goes on to give examples of how to develop leadership skills, and the key themes/characteristics needed to promote good health and safety.
