In the July issue of SHP, Bryan Henesey examines how one of the UK’s most iconic nightclubs, Ministry of Sound, balances entertainment and ensuring the safety and health of workers and revellers.

Loud music and noise are seen as essential parts of the events industry experience, and the idea of safety in an entertainment space can seem alien – especially in a space as loud as the Ministry of Sound.

Henesey shows how the premises goes about protecting staff, by monitoring sound levels and making sure they understand the risks they are exposed to. Proper instruction and training are vital to this understanding. They also limit the amount of time workers spend in noisy areas, and provide quiet zones – for staff and customers.

The article also discusses the venue’s plans for a new underground nightclub, and how they hope to design it to reduce both noise and diminish the environmental impact on residents.

Also mentioned is the recent visit from IOSH members and its Sports Grounds and Events Group, who congregated to discuss ways to respond to some of the events industry’s most dynamic issues.

This article will appear in the July issue, out at the beginning of the month.
