Enter now for the BSIF Safety Awards 2014

Submissions are now open for the BSIF Safety Awards, which are taking place at the Safety & Health Expo at ExCeL London in June.

The awards, which reward excellence in customer service, product innovation and demonstrable improvements in occupational health and safety are open to both members and non-members looking to publicise their products and services.

The three award categories that companies can put themselves forward for are:

Product innovation — an award for products that are new and innovative and will contribute to improvements in occupational safety and health. Last year this award was won by Paftec Ltd for their Clean Space 2 Powered Respirator.

Service awards — for companies in the safety field offering exceptional and innovative service solutions voted for by the entrants’ own customers. Last year it was won by WC Willis & Co Ltd.

Safety excellence — based on case studies submitted by members, these awards recognise major improvements in occupational safety created in 2013. Last year this was awarded to J&K Ross Ltd for their work with Northern Powergrid.

The deadline for entries is Friday 21 March. For full information visit www.bsif.co.uk.

Once again this government and this Prime Minister are showing how out of touch with reality they are. It’s alright removing certain pieces of legislation that are outdated and irrelevant, that’s just pruning to keep the system healthy, but to remove the duty of the self-employed is a kick in the head for all those who have worked hard in the past to ensure that the workplace is as safe as it can be.

This is another attempt by the Prime Minister to hit the headlines and glean votes and popularity so he can stay in power for another four years and has very little to do with health and safety red tape. There are a great many self-employed traders in the UK who have a total disregard for not only their safety but that of others safety as it is. As a consultant and safety trainer I have seen the results of certain self- employed tradesmen’s actions with regards health and safety and the effects it has had on the client and general public. We need to embrace with open arms a health and safety culture and nurture and help it develop and grow it in the workplace

As the instigator of such an irresponsible policy perhaps the government should be prosecuted under corporate manslaughter legislation in the future, when (not if) the worst happens?
