Airbus faces charges over crush death

Following an inquest last year, Airbus is now facing charges after the death of an experienced mechanic at its Flintshire factory, who was crushed between a tractor and a hopper.

Donald Williams, 62. from Buckley, died in hospital following the incident in a maintenance garage at the wing-making factory in November 2011.

The company has now appeared before magistrates on charges brought by the HSE.

It is alleged that Airbus failed to ensure Mr Williams’ safety, to assess the risks of working with a Ford 3610 tractor and to provide adequate training when using the machinery.

The case will now be listed for 10 April at Wrexham Magistrates’ Court.

An inquest jury at Ruthin returned a verdict of misadventure on Mr Williams last November.

Following the incident, Airbus Broughton site manager Paul McKinlay said: “Everyone at Broughton is deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.

“All our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

How awfully tragic to have to utter the words “All our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”, when just a flicker of those same thoughts , applied to risk assessment and and communication, would have made them unnecessary
