Medical and fabric masks: Who wears what when?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a video outlining when medical masks and fabric masks should be worn in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Medical masks
It states medical masks should be worn by health workers, people who have COVID-19 symptoms and those who care for anyone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
In areas where COVID-19 is widespread and physical distancing of at least one meter cannot be achieved, the WHO advises that medical masks should be work by anyone over 60 as well as people with underlying health conditions.
Fabric masks
The WHO video advises fabric masks should be worn by those who do not have COVID-19 symptoms where the disease is widespread and physical distancing of at least one meter is not possible. It says fabric masks should be considered in busy public settings such as on public transport, in the workplace and in shops.
The video concludes by urging viewers to follow local authorities’ advice on the use of masks.
