A girl aged seven has been killed after she was hit by a ‘slow-moving’ skip lorry while she was crossing the road with her mother.
Sophia McDonald was hit at 4pm on Tuesday night as her and her mother were making their way across a road in Coventry.
Medics were called, but the child couldn’t be resuscitated.
The driver of the “slow-moving red skip lorry” stopped at the scene and is assisting West Midlands Police with their investigations.
The police are asking for any witnesses to come forward and have especially appealed to the drivers of a taxi and a small turquoise car who may be able to help shed some more light on what happened.
Sergeant Alan Wood said: “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information that could help with the investigation to contact us.
“Our thoughts are with the family of this little girl at this difficult time, who are being supported by specialist officers.
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Sophia’s family at this difficult time.”

Don’t get me wrong, this is a terrible thing to happen to a family – but what about the driver? The wording of the article and reported comment by the police incriminate the driver – who is presumably so used to knocking over and killing little girls that he doesn’t require any specialist counselling and that our thoughts should not be wasted on him and his no doubt completely unaffected family?
There is an awful lot of sensationalising of these types of articles, but there is rarely any follow up. Perhaps the driver will be found responsible – note, I didn’t use the word guilty – or perhaps there will be a string of circumstances that resulted in the driver being the victim. The truth is, you are unlikely to give him a voice.

Trish, I totally agree with your comments, the media are great at treating people as guilty until proven innocent by sensationalising news items. My thoughts go out to all concerned at this harrowing time.

This does appear to be a road traffic accident (rta) which shall NOT be covered by regulator HSE e.g. bin lorry 6 deaths Glasgow not covered by HSE.
