Safety and health practitioners need new skills to influence change

Business education is becoming increasingly important to how safety and health practitioners work, and they are not always equipped with the right knowledge.

To explain the relevance of business education to health and safety, Rob Cooling, director of health and safety (Middle East) for WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff, will be presenting ‘safety and health practitioner: compliance officer to value merchant’ at the IOSH conference today.

Against the wider backdrop of risk, safety and health practitioners increasingly need to have the ability to talk to business units in strategic and commercial terms, with a view to creating solutions that are integrated with wider business considerations.

Mr Cooling will highlight the skills needed to influence change at work – transitioning from an approach based on compliance and avoidance of loss events, to a position where safety and health are seen as integrated business functions critical to organisational success.

On completion of the session, delegates will be able to develop their level of influence in the workplace by learning how to integrate safety and health within business strategy and decision-making; create ownership of safety and health through a cross-disciplinary approach; and generate interest from stakeholders by selling safety and health in a creative fashion.

Rob Cooling will be presenting in track B in the IOSH conference from 14.35.
