Occupational Safety and Health Conference

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is hosting a one-day occupational safety and health conference in London on 19 November to raise awareness of the impact of occupational ill health.

According to recent statistics, ill health accounts for 43 per cent of health and safety incidents, 84 per cent of sickness absence and over 99 per cent of work-related deaths each year.

This year’s annual event will cover the Department for Work and Pensions’ forthcoming health and work service; a new occupational health advice and support service for employees, employers and GPs, which the government argues will help individuals with a health condition stay in or return to work.

Nick McGruer, deputy director, health and wellbeing from the DWP will be presenting the department’s new service and delegates will be able to find out how the system will operate and to ask questions.

The one-day conference will also look at what employers can do to strategically manage stress as well as provide delegates with an opportunity to hear about a campaign to de-stigmatise mental health. Presentations will also cover asbestos, occupational cancers, workplace wellbeing, and noise induced hearing loss.

I’m really looking forward to this conference after the success of the Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress Campaign at the European Week for Safety and Health at Work.
