More than 24,000 workers driving illegally in UK

Employers are being urged to check that workers have valid drivers’ licences, as, if not, they could face criminal charges in the event of a fatal road accident.

New research carried out by the Licence Bureau, which verifies driving licences on behalf of businesses, estimates that there are 24,000 workers driving illegally for companies in Britain. This means that on average, one out of every 300 licences for people who drive for work was invalid.

The Licence Bureau found that of the non-compliant drivers that they checked, 43 per cent held a provisional licence, 31 per cent had a revoked licence, and 9 per cent were disqualified from driving.

The Bureau’s chief executive Malcolm Maycock is keen to remind businesses that they have a responsibility to ensure that any worker who drives as part of their job must have a valid licence. €
