Jewellery Quarter incident: Worker killed by collapsed wall on construction site

A construction worker has been killed after a wall collapsed inside a building in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The incident, which happened inside a former factory where building work had been taking place, occurred in Vittoria Street just before 18:00 on Wednesday 8 May.

A 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene have been reportedly found trapped under a ‘significant amount of rubble’.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while another person was discharged at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and is expected to carry out a full investigation.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, ambulance staff were faced with the aftermath of a wall collapse.

“Tragically, one man was confirmed dead at the scene.”

West Midlands Police Force Incident Manager, Chief Inspector Dave Keen, said: “Attempts were made by paramedics to resuscitate the man but there was nothing that could be done to save him.

“We have made contact with his family and they are being supported by police officers.

“This was a significant wall collapse which has potentially destabilised other parts of the building and structural surveys will be carried out in due course.”
