Get ready for the World Day for Safety and Health at Work

28 April 2016 is the ILO’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work promoting the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health and on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide. This year the campaign is focused on workplace stress.

On the same day International Workers’ Memorial Day takes place. It is a day to remember those that have been killed, maimed, injured and made ill by work and a chance to renew the pledge to fight for the living, by raising safety concerns in the workplace and raising public awareness of the importance of health and safety.

This year’s theme is: Strong laws. Strong enforcement. Strong unions.

How can you get involved in IWMD16?

Use social media:

  • #IWMD16 is the established twitter hashtag for promoting IWMD this year.

  • Encourage people to wear a purple ribbon;
  • Ask for flags to be flown at half mast;
  • Hold a minute’s silence at 12 noon at work;
  • Plant a tree, set up a plaque, bench or statue; and/or
  • Display posters.
