Event to develop safety partnership and best practice

A two-day conference organised by one of Britain’s biggest businesses could become a blueprint for supporting supply chain companies, according to its organisers.

BAE Systems, the global defence, aerospace and security firm which employs nearly 87,000 people across the world, is hosting the event for 200 of its suppliers, contractors and partners to share safety best practice and promote how firms can use a strong safety record to win new business.

The event, Partnership for Success, is being held at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool, Lancashire, on 2-3 April.

Danny Martland, director of safety, health and environment for BAE Systems’ Military Air and Information business, said it was working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to create a blueprint for blue-chip firms seeking to support their supply chain.

He said: “The view of the HSE is that big blue-chip companies like BAE Systems can play an influential role in supporting its suppliers, more effectively than a regulator could achieve by simply regulating.

“From this we came up with the idea of hosting a conference where we could share our story around safety improvements and performance and provide a forum to debate the ideas behind that.

“Our ambition is that if this proves successful it can become the blueprint for other major companies.”

He added the event could pave the way for the development of a safety partnership which could share best practice throughout the length of the supply chain.

Keynote speakers at the event include HSE director David Gartside and Nigel Whitehead, group managing director of BAE Systems’ Programmes and Support Business.

There will also be a number of workshops headed by members of BAE Systems’ supply chain including engineering giant Rolls-Royce, facilities firm Sodexo, and personal protective equipment supplier, ARCO.
