Crane collapses in New York City

A crane has partially collapsed in New York City injuring 12 people.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning in the Hell’s Kitchen area of the city near Tenth Avenue and West 41st Street.

It sat 45 stories atop a building while lifting 16 tonnes of concrete when it caught fire before partially collapsing, causing debris to fall to the street.

The Fire Department of New York told CNN that at least 12 people have been injured including three firefighters and nine civilians.

According to officials, the crane is owned by the New York Crane & Equipment Corp., In 2008, one of the firms’s cranes killed two workers in Manhattan with the company and owner ultimately being acquitted of manslaughter charges. However, a mechanic pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

The incident led to the resignati0n of the city’s building commissioner and the implementation of new safety measures, which will now be scrutinised following yesterday’s scenes.
