Capita Safety Lecture goes ‘beyond the boundary’
Lawrence Waterman, director of health and safety at the Battersea Power Station Development, will be presenting the 24th annual Capita Safety Lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons in London on 14 October.
As Waterman will explain, the lecture has, over the years, provided an opportunity to explore new, dynamic aspects of workplace-focused health and safety issues.
However, modern approaches to wellbeing are making the site fence much more porous, both spatially and chronologically. This, he will argue, is vital as cities continue to grow at a rapid pace.
His presentation, entitled “Health, safety and wellbeing beyond the construction site boundary”, will explore two important aspects of the modern approach to construction.
The first is the way health, safety and wellbeing initiatives are being taken by site teams and are then extended into local communities. In an exclusive interview with Waterman ahead of the lecture (see SHP October issue), SHP explores this aspect in more detail and hears how the Battersea Power Station Development has put it into practice. Waterman provides a number of practical examples, which he will draw upon in his lecture.
The second part of his lecture focuses on the long-term outcomes of construction projects and how they are also being influenced by and making a contribution to the wellbeing agenda.
“From new strategies to focus on ‘place making’, to the early development of enhanced public realm to encourage healthy behaviours such as walking, running and cycling through to a much broader understanding of mixed use developments, the challenge is to create and sustain communities,” he will argue.
“There is a necessity to weave this into the design from the beginning and in this respect, construction is making a tremendous contribution to better cities.”
