Arco welcomes opportunity to continue to influence European standards post Brexit

Divisional Director of Quality and Technical Standards at Arco, Neil Hewitt, responds to the announcement that the British Standards Institution (BSI) will remain a member of the European Standards.

Neil Hewitt said: “We welcome the news that the BSI will remain a full member of the European Standards Organisations following the UK’s departure from the EU on 29 March 2019.

“Without this membership, there could have been heightened confusion and uncertainty over the legal status of European standards in the UK. However, the new agreement means that there will now be a transition period until the end of December 2020, during which the BSI will be able to remain a full active member.”

The General Assemblies, including the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) and The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) is responsible for the alignment of standards of EU countries or the states due to join the EU.

Neil added: “Arco currently has representation on several of the BSI, CEN technical committees and working groups to support the development of European Standards. By continuing UK participation our experts have the opportunity to be the voice of our customers and remain an integral part in the development of standards and best practice that are in our industry’s best interest.

“Although leaving the EU will afford the UK an opportunity to review health and safety regulation such as the issues relating to product compliance and subsequent enforcement by a competent authority, which were revealed in Arco’s recent CE is No Guarantee’ campaign, this is only achievable by continuing the UK’s relationship with EU organisations.”

‘PPE Regulations see the most significant change in 20 years’, says Arco’s Neil Hewitt
