New code of practice on door repair and maintenance

Best-practice techniques for the repair and maintenance of industrial, commercial and fire-resisting doors and shutters are identified in a Code of Practice published by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).

The Code stresses the importance of regular door and shutter maintenance and has been produced specifically to help manufacturers, repair and maintenance organisations, specifiers and end users comply fully with all the requirements of the safety enforcement authorities, says the DHF.

It spells out what should be done to achieve optimum quality of operation with maximum safety in use throughout the full expected lifecycle of the equipment. It also includes listings of legal requirements and guidance documents, gives definitions of common terminology, and identifies the specific documentation needed for correct repair and maintenance.

Necessary operational documentation and minimum requirements for repair and maintenance personnel are also described.

“The need for building owners and managers to implement regular service and maintenance procedures to keep within the law is clear,” said Michael Skelding, general manager and secretary of the DHF. “However, there is an important bottom-line advantage as well. The financial benefit of planned routine maintenance against high-cost emergency call-outs is plain to see. There’s a continuing demand for an authoritative guide to address these issues, which is why the DHF has made this Code available.”

The DHF Code of Practice for the Repair and Maintenance of Industrial and Commercial Doors is available to download from the DHF website.
