Focus on women’s health in the workplace

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has published two new booklets on gender issues and working conditions.

Acknowledging that issues relating to women in the workplace have traditionally lacked visibility, the publication Gender, work and health provides an overview of the differences and inequalities in work and health between women and men. The document offers advice for governments, employers, workers and researchers on what action is required.

A second publication, Building healthy and equitable workplaces for women and men, is aimed at employers and worker representatives. The document considers how to build equitable workplaces for both genders but gives special attention to matters predominantly affecting women.

The booklet includes: ways to address the needs of women and men in areas of physical and psychosocial health; personal health resources and enterprise-community involvement; and routes to protect and promote workers’ health based on the WHO’s healthy-workplaces model.

The publications can be downloaded at www.who.int/occupational_health/publications/en/
