March 23, 2007Can flour explode? That’s just one of the questions school children in Edinburgh will be asking themselves after a visit to The Risk Factory, thanks to sponsorship by their local IOSH branch.
The Risk Factory — www.theriskfactory.org — is a safety centre where school visitors get to experience danger and learn how to deal with it. The IOSH Edinburgh Branch has sponsored a page within the student workbook.
Andrew Sharman, vice-chair of the branch, explains: “We wanted our page to reflect the style of Wiseup2work because it appeals directly to the kids who will be using the workbook. The design team at IOSH head office adapted one of the activities in the workplace hazard awareness course and the result looks great! It’s fun, colourful, and also encourages them to visit Wiseup2work to check their answers.”
The branch submitted a bid to the IOSH development fund to pay for the sponsorship. Luise Vassie, research and technical services manager, said: “This is a great use of the fund, because it promotes the work we’ve been doing to engage young people about health and safety and also raises the profile of the Edinburgh branch in their local community.”
