A Manchester-based factory failed to identify the dangers posed by modifications it made to a machine, which was subsequently involved in a fatality.
Reading Crown Court heard that a night-shift worker died when he was trapped in a machine at Duco International Ltd’s factory in Slough, Berkshire. Mitesh Prashar was operating an automatic inspection machine, which checks the quality of rolls of rubber and cloth printing blanket before delivery to customers. The blanket moves through the machine from one reel to another via a photographic unit, which checks the fabric for flaws.€

I don’t know why it has taken nearly four years to prosecute this company considering it looks like an open and shut case.
Interesting to note the company has ceased trading. However, when I Googled Duco International Ltd, I found a web link and this led me to another company providing…inks, blankets, pressroom chemistry, flexographic plates and sleeves, consumables and colourants. Sound falimliar?
The firm’s registered office address is in Manchester, and it has a factory in Slough.
Ray’s right it does seem a long time to wait for the case to be sentenced. Good on the HSE for carrying on with the prosecution despite the company ceasing trading. It shows that you can’t commit a H&S offense and then start up a new firm to avoid punishment.
