ONS study: environment ‘saved £1bn in health costs’ in 2015

A new study commissioned by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has claimed the environment is crucial to  tackling health issues from poor air quality, especially in urban areas.

According to the ONS study, the environment is playing a vital role in tackling the problem of poor air quality and helping to protect people’s health and reduce spending on healthcare.

The top-line figures from the UK due to pollution being removed by vegetation are:

  • Over £1 million was estimated to have been saved in 2015 on avoided health costs, thanks to natural pollution removal by plants.
  • an estimated 5,800 fewer respiratory hospital admissions
  • 1,300 fewer cardiovascular hospital admissions
  • 27,000 fewer life years lost
  • 1,900 fewer premature deaths

Emily Connors from the Office for National Statistics said: “The findings remind us of the vital importance that trees and plants play, not just in providing an attractive environment that contributes to our wellbeing, but also in their very practical and economically significant health benefits, especially in urban areas.”
