73-year-old man dies in farming incident

The man was reportedly struck by a tractor in a field in Co. Galway yesterday.

A 73-year old man has died following an accident on a farm in Co. Galway, Ireland, yesterday (Tuesday 24 July), the Health and Safety Authority has (HSA) confirmed.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

The news comes on the back of Farm Safety Week when it was reported that agriculture has the highest rate of fatalities in Britain, with farm workers over 65 being the most vulnerable.

Figures released last week showed 33 deaths occurred in the agricultural sector between March 2017 and July 2018.

Speaking to SHP Online, NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts said: “The industries track record when it comes to health and safety is shocking and has been consistently poor for many years. We need to start learning from our mistakes rather than repeating them.”
